If you’ve been working hard to make changes to your eating and exercise habits, the holidays can be a rough time of year. The occasional, “I’m just going to treat myself” moment can turn into a daily event, and before you know it you’re back to your old unhealthy habits.
Hy-Vee Dietitian Teresa Blauwet has some tips for staying accountable during the holidays.
Holiday Health Tips
• Find an accountability buddy. Whether this is someone who will meet you at 5 a.m. for a run or check you when you’re going a little too far off track with your diet, this person needs to be someone who isn’t afraid to tell you to put down the sugar cookie and walk away.

This may seem counterintuitive since most dietitians tell you not to obsess over weight loss but rather focus on lifestyle changes. During this time of year a few extra trips to the scale can provide a needed reminder that it’s time to rein it in and get back on track.
• Eat consciously and enjoy your treat meals. Mindlessly eating by the buffet could get even the healthiest eater in trouble. When possible, sit down and really take the time to enjoy your holiday food — you’re less likely to overindulge this way.
• Stay on track the rest of the time. When you’re not heading to a holiday party or meal, plan the healthier fare you’ve gotten used to eating. Focus on vegetables, whole grains and lean meats and try to cut out the things you know you’ve been overindulging on, such as alcohol and sweets. Try to keep your house free of holiday treats.
• Keep a food diary to track what you’re eating and how it’s making you feel.
• Keep moving. Don’t let exercise fall off the to-do list during this busy time of year whether it’s going to the gym or enjoying a family game of football.
