Thanksgiving is over, and Christmas is just around the corner. The holiday season is in full swing. This is the time when we visit family members whom we don’t often see, enjoy holiday parties and are out in the hustle and bustle of the shopping crowds. All of this togetherness leads to sharing — sharing of germs, that is. There will be plenty of coughing, sneezing and runny noses to spread thousands of germs amidst the games, laughter and eating. Children who are not fully immunized or other others with weak immune systems are more susceptible to serious infections. This is a good time to encourage everyone to wash their hands frequently and consider setting out bottles of hand sanitizer for all to use. In this season of caring, remember to care for your health and the health of those around you. If you are feeling ill, skip the holiday socials scene until well.
All the holiday activities can lead to accidents as well as illnesses. To avoid accidents and injuries follow these tips:
- Keep burning candles and small decorations out of reach of small children.
- Store rugs that people may slip or trip over or secure rugs to the floor.
- Clear your walkways, stairs and porches of snow and ice.
- Do not burn wrapping paper in the fireplace; it may overheat the chimney.
- Do not drink and drive.
Following these tips can help you have a wonderful holiday season. Have a safe and happy holiday from Avera Health Plans.
