Three Easy Steps to Cure Dry, Itchy Skin

If you suffer from dry, itchy skin, these three steps may be all you need to feel and look your best.

  1.  Swap your soap for a cleanser. Many people swear by their soap – they’ve been using brand X, Y or Z for years. But soaps are not all created equal, especially for those suffering from dry skin. Instead of a regular soap, which can be very drying, try showering or bathing with a cleanser. These products don’t strip your skin’s natural moisturizers away. Two products to try are Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser and CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser.
  2. Turn down the water temperature.  Many people with dry skin are also itchy. These people find that hot showers soothe their itch and so they tend to turn the water temperature up as far as they can stand it. This is counter-productive. Hot water, although soothing for a moment, is actually very drying on the skin. Your best bet? Use warm, not hot, water in the shower and try to get in and out of the shower in a relatively short time (10 minutes or less).
  3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.  This is by far the most important step of caring for dry skin. When buying a moisturizer, look for creams and ointments rather than lotions. Some good brands include Cetaphil, CeraVe, Vanicream, and Aquaphor. Plain Vaseline (petroleum jelly) is actually one of the best moisturizers available and it is very affordable. The best time to apply your moisturizer is immediately after getting out of the shower – step out, towel off, and moisturize. Do this daily and you’re sure to feel and see results within a few days!
