If you’ve been paying attention you know that diet an exercise play a key role in preventing heart disease. In fact, according to Harvard Medical School, you can lower your risk of heart attack by 87 percent by adopting five healthy habits:

• Not using tobacco products

• Exercising daily

• Eating a wholesome diet

• Alcohol in moderation

• Maintaining a healthy weight

That means exercising at least 30 minutes daily and following a diet that is rich in lean meats, whole grains and fruits and vegetables. Easy right?

Getting Started

Here are a few tips to get you started:

• Choosing whole foods that are minimally processed

• Shop outside of the grocery store aisles

• Eat a rainbow of foods from dark green and orange to purple and red fruits and vegetables

• Take up an active hobby

• Find group activities to keep you motivated and moving

• Ask a buddy to exercise with you

• Do a range of things from cardiovascular activities like biking and walking to weight training and stretching
