How Can You Reduce Health Care Insurance Costs?

What a great summer I had! I was able to travel back to Wyoming and see some old friends. This was a much needed break as I am gearing up for all the changes in health care for 2014.

My friends asked, “How does the Affordable Care Act and wellness impact health insurance?” One thing that I told them was that some employers may increase your health insurance premium up to 50-percent next year if you use tobacco. An easy way to decrease your health insurance costs is to not use tobacco or quit if you are already a user.

In my role as Wellness Champion, I have been asked to come up with a program to reduce tobacco-use for our employer-sponsored plans. I developed an eight-week program that can be done right at the workplace. I know that not all of my readers are Avera Health Plans members but please check with your employer or insurance provider for information on tobacco cessation programs they provide.

Besides saving you money on your health insurance, quitting tobacco can lead to a healthier you. As stated by the Center for Disease Control, “Tobacco use is responsible for 440,000 deaths every year in the United States and one out of two smokers die from a smoking related disease.” So we are placing a priority for our members to get healthier by offering these FREE programs.

If you are a current member of Avera Health Plans and interested in our FREE group that meets one time a week, call (605-322-4789) or email me. For employers interested in group sessions help onsite, please contact me as well. Learn more about our tobacco cessation program today. If you are not a member of Avera Health Plans but wish to quit using tobacco, there are many resources available.
