Further, more severe side effects can disrupt a patient’s ability to complete planned cancer treatments, thus lessening the effectiveness of the overall approach to the patient’s cancer care.
Integrative Medicine therapies can be a terrific value for patients to counteract their side effects and restore their whole health, without the risk of additional medication interactions and side effects. An Integrative Medicine (IM) program is available here at the Prairie Center. Our program offers an array of therapies including acupuncture, massage, mindfulness, nutrition, health coaching, guidance for herbs and supplements and essential oils.
Patients undergoing cancer treatments can take advantage of complimentary therapies offered throughout the building such as movement classes, mindfulness groups, singing bowl relaxation, massage and art therapy projects. The clinic offers consultation with a physician regarding applications of IM tools to alleviate side effects with their therapies. Common side effects that patients treat through our clinic, such as nausea and vomiting, pain, diarrhea, constipation and fatigue all may be lessened with the services we provide. Our approaches have had good outcomes for cancer patients with other side effects, too, including insomnia, neuropathy, hot flashes, headaches, depression, anxiety and dry mouth.
You can apply some Integrative Medicine tools such as mindfulness and essential oils at home after instruction at the consultation. Return appointments for massage and acupuncture are available, and we generally work with you to schedule appointments to coincide with your the cancer treatment dates, thus helping to directly avert the side effects in a timely fashion. We have found that clinically 80 percent of patients who have acupuncture find it adequately counteracts side effects of cancer treatment.
When you or someone you love has acute symptoms of side effects, let them know that with integrative medicine, we expect to see results within the first few treatments. Most of our patients report that they look forward to their acupuncture sessions because they a relaxing experience.
We have the benefit of side-by-side comparisons as well. Some of our patients have experienced cancer treatments with and without the use of Integrative Medicine therapies. Their feedback is unanimous: the addition of IM therapy makes people feel better.
Integrative Medicine tools empower patients going through cancer therapies to effectively halt side effects, and a decrease in side effects improves your overall sense of well-being.
If that well-being allows successful completion of cancer treatments, you can see why it’s an important consideration.
